WALKING AND HIKING TRAILS
There are various walking trails of all levels and durations – easy, medium and hard, though none are too difficult or involve any great degree of fitness. And they start right outside our gate. There is also the Kututsa Hiking trail with overnight stays in the caves. Walk along a cool, tree shaded river in the heat of summer, or take a gentle mountain walk to see the wonderful views in all directions, with great views of the, sometimes snow clad, Maloti Mountains. In spring take a walk through the cherry orchards in full blossom. At the end of summer the cosmos form breathtaking carpets in the whole area. Back

There are various wild veld flowers at all times of the year. A variety of game and birds can be seen on our walking trails, as well as our cows and polo horses, which are all allowed to roam the area without stabling. We have caves (including the second largest in the Free State), waterfalls, rivers, and 5 cool dams to simply sit next to, swim in, or if you like, fishing. We will also take you on a guided walk if you prefer. We also have many bird and plant books so you can find out which species you have seen. The Highveld Winter is the best time for walking as we have warm clear days, and clear bracing cold nights. Every few years we even have snow - no problem with our roaring fires and electric blankets.

GAME VIEWING AND BIRD WATCHING

If you like game viewing there are many animals to see on the farm itself. It is not unusual to see warthogs, blesbok, steenbok, and mountain reedbuck whilst out on
a walk. We also have our own small herd of Zebra. Walk along the fence with Thabo Thaba and see herds of eland, wildebeest, zebras, hartbees, blesbok, gemsbok and many others. A game drive can be arranged in the adjacent Thabo Thaba private game farm. Franshoek, with its many dams, is a bird watchers paradise affording sightings of eagles and other raptors, secretary birds, spoonbills, sacred ibises, storks, herons, ducks, Egyptian Geese, Guinea Fowl and many others. There are many owls in the area to be seen at dusk and at night. There are also many small animals to be seen, such as colonies of meerkats, ground squirrels, mongoose, porcupines, and if you are very lucky, jackals and some cats such as karakals, wild cats and genets.
